How to Keep Hair Smooth in Florida Humidity

By Classic Styles Salon & Day Spa ·

Quick answer: Humidity frizz happens when dry or damaged hair soaks up moisture from the air and swells unevenly. To keep hair smooth in Florida, condition it well, towel-dry gently, put a light smoothing product on damp hair, and go easy on hot tools. If your hair still frizzes by lunchtime, a salon smoothing treatment can make a real difference.

Why Florida air makes hair frizz

Hair is thirsty. Each strand has an outer layer, and when that layer is rough or lifted from sun, salt, chlorine, hot tools or color, the strand takes in moisture from the air and swells. It does not swell evenly, so the strand bends and flares, and you get frizz. On a Pasco County summer day, with the air feeling like warm soup, there is plenty of moisture to go around.

The good news is that frizz is usually a sign of dry hair, not a sign you are doing something wrong. Smoother hair starts with giving it what it is missing and then keeping the outside of the strand as smooth as you can.

1. Wash a little less, and condition a little more

Shampoo cleans, but it also strips oils that help hair stay soft. Many women do well washing every second or third day, and using dry shampoo at the roots in between. When you do wash, focus the shampoo on your scalp and let the suds rinse down the lengths. Then put conditioner from the ears down, leave it in for a couple of minutes while you do something else in the shower, and rinse well.

Once a week, swap your regular conditioner for a deeper mask. If you swim, rinse your hair with fresh water before you get in the pool, because wet hair soaks up less chlorine.

2. Dry it gently

Rubbing wet hair with a rough towel roughens the outer layer. Instead, squeeze the water out, then wrap your hair in a soft cotton T-shirt or a microfiber towel for a few minutes. Comb through with a wide-tooth comb, starting at the ends and working up, rather than dragging a brush through wet knots.

3. Use a light product on damp hair

The best time to fight frizz is before your hair dries. A small amount of smoothing cream, leave-in conditioner or a few drops of serum, worked through damp hair, helps keep the outer layer flat. Start with less than you think you need. Fine hair is quickly weighed down, and thick or coarse hair usually takes a little more.

Then leave your hair alone as it dries. Touching it, brushing it and running your fingers through it all stir up frizz.

4. Be kind with hot tools

Blow dryers and flat irons dry hair out, and dry hair frizzes. Use a heat protectant, turn the temperature down a notch, and stop when your hair is dry instead of going over it again and again. If you can let your hair air-dry about 80 percent of the way before you blow-dry, you will cut your heat time a lot.

5. Remember that gray and color-treated hair is often drier

Many women notice their hair gets drier and wirier with age, and gray hair in particular can feel coarser. Color, highlights and perms also change how a strand takes in moisture. None of that means you can’t have smooth hair. It does mean a richer conditioner and a lighter hand with heat are worth the effort.

6. Trim before the ends fray

Split, frayed ends frizz first and can make the whole head look fuzzy. A regular trim keeps the shape clean so everything lies down better. Cuts at Classic Styles start at $25, and walk-ins are welcome Tuesday through Saturday, so a quick tidy-up doesn’t need a big plan. See our haircuts and styling.

7. Try a satin pillowcase

It is a small thing, but a smooth surface means less friction on your hair overnight. You are going to be lying on a pillowcase for a third of your life, so a slippery one is worth trying.

When a salon treatment is worth it

If you do all of the above and your hair still puffs up the moment you step outside, the strands may need more than home care can give. Our restorative and smoothing treatments are made for Florida hair. We look at your hair first, tell you honestly what it needs, and tell you what to expect, including how to care for it at home so the results last. You can see one real client’s frizz-to-smooth change on our before-and-after slider.

Not sure what your hair needs? Come in and ask. Our stylists have worked with Gulf Coast hair for more than 35 years, and Debbie alone has 41 years behind the chair. We’d rather give you honest advice than sell you something you don’t need.
