Box Dye Gone Wrong? What to Do Next

By Classic Styles Salon & Day Spa ·

Quick answer: If box dye went wrong, stop and don’t dye over it again or bleach it at home. Each new layer makes it harder to fix. Take a photo of the box and of your hair, and come in for a free color consultation. A good correction often happens in stages, because getting from dark or uneven to light and even is gentler on your hair when it is not rushed.

First: breathe, and put the box down

Almost everyone who has colored their own hair has had a moment like this. The color on the box said “light golden brown” and your hair says “midnight.” Or the blonde went orange. Or the roots are one shade and the ends another. It happens a lot, and it is almost always fixable.

The biggest mistake we see is a second box, applied right away to cover the first one. It feels logical, and it is often the thing that makes the correction longer.

What not to do

  • Don’t dye over it again. Layering color builds up pigment that is harder to lift out later.
  • Don’t bleach it at home. Bleach on box dye can turn uneven, orange or very dry quickly.
  • Don’t wash it over and over to fade it. It can strip moisture without fixing the color.
  • Don’t panic-cut. You can usually keep your length. Talk to a stylist first.

Why box dye is hard to correct

Box color is made to work on everyone’s hair, so it’s usually strong, and it’s permanent. It also goes on all one color, from your roots to your ends. But your hair isn’t all one color or one condition. Your ends are older and more porous than your roots, so they grab more pigment. If you have gray hair, it takes color differently from the rest. If you have colored before, there are layers of old color underneath too.

That’s why you can end up with dark ends, bright roots or a patchy middle. A stylist has to work with all of it at once.

Why color correction can take stages

Lifting dark color out and then putting the right tone back in is a lot to ask of your hair in one sitting. If a stylist rushes it, your hair can end up dry, frizzy or breaking. A careful correction often happens in steps. Each step moves the color closer to your goal, and your hair gets a rest in between, sometimes with a conditioning treatment.

It can feel like a long road, but the end result is hair that is the color you wanted and still feels like hair. A stylist will tell you after looking at your hair how many steps it is likely to take. Sometimes it is one visit. Sometimes it is more, and we would rather say so honestly up front.

What to bring to your consultation

  1. The box, or a photo of it, so we know what’s in your hair.
  2. A photo of the color you want. Pictures beat words every time.
  3. A rough history: when you last colored it, whether it was at home or at a salon, and whether you have used henna, a perm or a relaxer.
  4. Your hair as it is. Please don’t try to fix it before you come in.

What happens at the consultation

It is free, and there is no pressure. We look at your hair in the light, check how it feels, and talk about what is realistic. Then you get a plan and a price before we begin. Color at Classic Styles starts from $60, and a correction will be quoted after we see your hair, because it depends on your hair’s length, condition and starting point. Natalie on our team is known for color correction and vivid color.

How to avoid it next time

  • Do a strand test before using any box color.
  • If you are going lighter, or covering gray, ask a stylist before you buy the box.
  • Don’t color over color. Ask about doing roots only.
